This is the process of measuring from the bottom of feet to the highest point of the head. It is measured using infantometer or stadiometer depending on the age of the child

Steps
1. Receive child/care into a comfortable seat
2. Perform five moments of hand hygiene as and when necessary
3. Establish rapport (refer steps)
4. Explain procedure to child/caregiver (refer steps)
5. Provide privacy
6. Incorporate developmentally appropriate strategies in dealing with the child
7. Assist caregiver to remove the child’s diaper and clothing and other accessories (completely undress if the weather is conducive and it is culturally acceptable)
8. Calm the child down if agitated
9. Remove socks, footwear and any hair accessories/extension
10. Ensure the child stands against an unobstructed stadiometer, the feet should be slightly apart with the back of the head, shoulder blades, buttocks, calves and heels touching the vertical board
11. Position the child’s head so that the horizontal line from the ear canal to the eye socket runs parallel to the base board with the eyes looking straight ahead
12. Show the child how to stand straight and gently guide the child’s knees and ankles to keep the legs straight
13. Read and record the child’s height in centimeters to the nearest 0.1 cm
14. Assist the child to step down from the stadiometer and dress up
15. Express appreciation to child/caregiver for their cooperation
16. Encourage follow up/refer if necessary
17. Disposed off, disinfect and clean used items
18. Document procedure in nurse’s notes
