Component Task: Making a Simple Unoccupied Bed

This is an empty bed covered with top linen so that all linen beneath are fully protected from dust and dirt while waiting for the admission of patient.

Aims

Facilitate quick admittance

Types

·         Closed Bed: All the top sheets are drawn up to the head end of the bed and all sides tucked in to prevent dust and dirt to the bottom sheet.

·         Open Bed: The top sheets are folded back to aid quick entry of new or ambulatory patient.

Requirements

·         A trolley with the following items:

a.      Two large cotton sheet (Bed linen)

b.      One water proof draw mackintosh or bed mat if necessary

c.      One draw sheet

d.      Pillow slips

e.      One top sheet

f.        Counterpane if necessary

·         Two chairs or heart table

·         Mattress

·         One or two pillows

Steps

1.        Perform hand hygiene

2.      Collect, arranges items on trolley and send to bedside

3.      Arrange items in order of use on chairs or heart table

4.      Place bottom sheet evenly on the bed

5.      Pull sheet tight so that there are no creases

6.      Tuck the bottom sheet evenly under the mattress at the top and bottom using mitered or enveloped corners

7.       Pull and tuck sheet at the sides to prevent creases

8.      Place bed mat or draw mackintosh at the mid portion of the bed

9.      Cover mackintosh or bed mat with draw sheet and tuck in at the sides

10.    Slip the pillow cases on the pillows with an assistant

11.      Place pillows on bed with open ends away from the entrance

12.    Place top sheet on bed with the wrong side uppermost

13.    Fold over at the bottom and tuck in loosely

14.    Place counterpane (if necessary) loosely over the bed

15.    Tuck counterpane (if necessary) at the bottom end using mitered or envelop corners

16.    Fold top sheet over the counterpane at the top end (per either Open or Closed bed)

17.    Tuck in sides under the mattress to prevent creases

18.    Remove trolley and chair or heart table

19.    Perform hand hygiene
