It is an act of giving special care to infants through skin-to-skin contact with the mother/ significant other. It is an easy method to promote the health and wellbeing of low birth weight and preterm infants. Kangaroo mother care is initiated in the hospital and continued at home.
Aims

· Promote bonding and attachment between mother/significant other
· Decrease infection rate
· Reduce apnoeic attacks
· Improve lactation and breastfeeding
Types
· Continuous KMC

Requirements
· KMC cloth/binder/wrap
· Reclining chair or bed with adjustable back rest or pillow
· Baby’s cap/bonnet, socks/bootie and mittens
· Diaper
· Front open light dress for mother/significant other
Steps
1. Establish rapport (Refer to steps)
2. Explain procedure to mother and family (Refer to steps)
3. Ensure stability of neonate by checking vital signs, SPO2 and random blood sugar
4. Obtain informed consent
5. Perform five moment of hand hygiene
6. Ensure privacy during the procedure
7. Dress up baby with cap, socks, mittens and diaper
8. Encourage mother/significant other to wear a front open light dress
9. Place baby in an upright position between the mother/significant other’s breast
10. Turn the head to one side in slightly extended position to keep airway open
11. Allow eye to eye contact between mother/significant other and baby
12. Position baby’s hip in a flexed and abducted position (frog like)
13. Place baby’s flexed arms on mother/significant other’s chest
14. Place baby’s abdomen on the level of mother/significant other’s epigastrium
15. Support or secure baby with binder/wrap/KMC cloth and the top of the binder should be at the baby’s ear
16. Monitor baby for airway, breathing, colour and temperature
17. Ensure baby’s neck position is neither flexed nor extended
18. Express appreciation to mother/significant other
19. Dispose off, decontaminate and clean used items
20. Document procedure manually or electronically
