Component Task: Administering Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) At A Child Welfare Clinic (CWC)

This is an activity carried out by the Public/Community health nurse at CWC where the nurse gives polio vaccine to a child to produce immunity. IPV is an injectable polio vaccine given at 14weeks.

Aims

·         Prevent children under five (5) or 0-59 months from poliomyelitis

·         Achieve herd immunity amongst children under five (5)

·         Educate mothers and caregivers on high level of proper personal and environmental hygiene

·         Educate mothers/caregivers on proper food hygiene

Requirements

a.      Furniture which includes chairs, tables, bulletin board

b.      Tablecloth

c.      Two (2) registers, one for registration of children under one (1) year and the other for children above one year

d.      Weighing tally sheets

e.      Master chart for grading nutritional status

f.        Attendance book

g.      Immunization tally sheets

h.      Maternal and child health record book

i.         Syringes and needles/solo shot

j.         Immunization tray containing gallipots, kidney dish, dissecting forceps, artery forceps, scissors

k.       Sterile cotton wool swabs in a closed drum

l.         Safety box for sharps

m.   Vaccine carrier containing vaccines/cold box

n.      A flask containing ice cubes

o.      Cheatle forceps

p.      Hand washing facilities- veronica bucket, plastic bowls, soap in a dish, hand towels

q.      Medication for treatment of minor ailments such as paracetamol, zinc tablets

r.        Electronic/manual visual aids for education

s.       Blue and red pens, pencils, eraser and rule

Steps

1.        Establish rapport and ask about general health or the health of the baby

2.      Find out from mother/caregiver the type of immunization the child has had previously

3.      Check the maternal and child health record book and find out which vaccine to give

4.      Explain the procedure to the mother/caregiver and ask for feedback

5.      Show mother/caregiver how to hold the child and wash hands with appropriate technique

6.      Pick vaccine with right hand, check vaccine vial monitor (VVM), expiry date and open it

7.       Clean the outer middle part of the right thigh 2.5cm away from PCV site with damp cotton wool and discard it

8.      Hold the part tightly between the thumb and forefinger with left hand and gently push the needle deep into the muscle at an angle of 90˚/45˚

9.      Remove and discard solo shot after injecting vaccine, press the area with dry clean cotton wool ball and discard

10.    Record and report findings manually/electronically
