Component Task: Structural Anthropometry - Measuring Recumbent Length (Less 2 Years)

This is the process of measuring from the bottom of feet to the highest point of the head. It is measured using infantometer or stadiometer depending on the age of the child.

Aims

·         Monitor growth and development

·         Assess stunting and manage accordingly

·         Assess nutritional status

Requirements

·         Tape measure

·         Stadiometer/infantometer

·         Alcohol rub

·         Child health record card/medical record

·         Pen/note pad

·         Percentile/standard deviation charts

·         Disinfectant

·         Examination gloves

·         Cotton swabs

Steps

1.        Receive child/care into a comfortable seat

2.      Perform five moments of hand hygiene as and when necessary

3.      Establish rapport (refer steps)

4.      Explain procedure to child/caregiver (refer steps)

5.      Provide privacy

6.      Incorporate developmentally appropriate strategies in dealing with the child

7.       Assist caregiver to remove the child’s diaper and clothing and other accessories (completely undress if the weather is conducive and it is culturally acceptable)

8.      Calm the child down if agitated

9.      Remove any headwear and/or footwear and extra clothing

10.    Place the infantometer on a flat and firm surface

11.      Position the child at the center of the infantometer as follows: om ear canal to the eye socket is perpendicular to the horizontal board

·         Head position: place the head towards the top of the board with cup hands over the child’s ears so that the vertical line fr – incomplete. (…so that the child is looking up).

·         Trunk and legs: stabilize the child’s trunk from the sides. Gently hold the knees ensuring they are straight but not overextended

12.    Ensure the caregiver/assistant supporting the child in positioning is doing it properly

13.    Position the child’s feet so that the soles are against the infantometer footboard

14.    Read and record the child’s length in centimetres (to the nearest 0.1 cm)

15.    Assist caregiver to dress up child

16.    Express appreciation to child/caregiver for their cooperation

17.    Encourage follow up/refer if necessary

18.    Document procedure in nurse’s notes
