This is a psychological therapy in which the RCPN works hand-in-hand with the client to bring about positive change in the client’s maladaptive behaviours.

· Help client appreciate himself and find ways of dealing with life challenges

Steps
1. Establish rapport (refer to procedure) and explain procedure to client
2. Inform client about the therapy session, time, venue and goals
3. Arrange the place and ensure good lighting and ventilation
4. Arrange chairs and table in an appropriate manner
5. Welcome client with a smile to the venue
6. Allow client to sit first while observing gestures, mannerism and posture
7. Initiate the conversation with brief introduction of what is to be expected for the session
8. Indicate to client the number of sessions and the time for each session
9. Inform client about the evaluation of each session to inform decision
10. Reassure client of confidentiality and effectiveness of the therapy
11. Set achievable goals of the therapy with client and start the session
12. Guide client to develop strategies in achieving the set goals
13. Assess client’s thoughts and feelings as client expresses self
14. Identify with client his/her perceived difficulties and possible contributing factors to the challenge
15. Speak in calm, soft voice during discussions without being judgmental
16. Avoid advising client but rather inform him or her about the copping strategies available
17. Allow client to come out with coping strategies
18. Support client to implement the strategies if possible
19. Communicate areas of progress and where client needs improvement
20. Allow client to express likes and or dislikes of the session and therapist
21. Document the procedure and inform the client, date and time of the next session
22. Congratulate client for successfully completing the session and close the session
