This is a form of psychotherapy in which a number of patients come together for discussion session to assist them improve their behaviour and wellbeing by sharing their experiences and adopting appropriate behavoiur patterns. Group therapy is usually carried out under the guidance of a nurse/therapist. NB: Group therapy sessions should not be more than one (1) hour

Steps
1. Advance Preparation:
· Prepare list of participants
· Prepare participants, venue, give time and date
· Identify a topic for discussion
2. Ensure participants have taken their medication, meals and are well groomed
3. Welcome and receive participants to the session
4. Sit participants according to their desired pattern (circular/horse shoe)
5. Establish rapport (refer procedure) and explain the procedure to the participants
6. Ask participants to introduce themselves
7. Identify a secretary for the session (assisting nurse)
8. Discuss with participants the goals of the session
9. Explain to participants the ground rules of the session
10. Initiate and direct discussion
11. Observe and involve all participants in the discussion
12. Recognize and identify conflicts and help participants to resolve them if applicable
13. Review the session highlighting achievements of goals for the session
14. Encourage participants to ask questions and answer appropriately
15. Summarize with the participants what has been discussed for the day
16. Set date, time and venue for the next session
17. Express appreciation to participants and direct them to the next activity the session and arrange for departure of participants
18. Document the procedure and any observation made in nurses’ notes/Patient’s folder
