Component Task: Education On Minor Disorders of Pregnancy: Morning Sickness

This is where the midwife gives information and coping strategies to a pregnant client/woman on nauseated feeling during pregnancy which occurs in the early trimester.

Aims

·         Eliminate nauseating foods from diet

·         Ensure proper nourishment of client and foetus

·         Prevents precipitating factors contributing to vomiting

·         Identify danger signs and report to the hospital

·         Restore electrolyte balance

Steps

1.        Establish rapport (refer steps)

2.      Provide privacy and ensure client assume desired position

3.      Explain to client the need to attend antenatal clinic and procedures involved

4.      Explain the possible cause of the nausea to her

5.      Advice client to avoid foods with strong smell and rich flavours

6.      Encourage her to eat a slice of toast or dry biscuit with nourishing fluid before getting up in the morning

7.       Encourage her to eat small amount of fluid at a time

8.      Help client to identify nauseating foods or substances and avoid them

9.      Advice client to let someone to prepare meals for her if possible to avoid the smell

10.    Encourage her to eat her preferred meals whenever she feels like

11.      Advice to her to get out of bed slowly

12.    Advise her not to skip meals

13.    Advice client to report to the clinic in case of severe vomiting

14.    Encourage client to ask questions and give appropriate answers

15.    Emphasize the need for client to adhere to information given

16.    Express appreciation of client for her cooperation

17.    Record and report all information in the Maternal and Child Health Book (Manual or Electronic)

Education On Minor Disorders of Pregnancy: Heartburns

These are series of interventions and giving of information by the midwife to a pregnant client/woman who is experiencing a burning sensation in the oesophagus that occurs after eating, bending forwards or lying down at night.

Aims

·         Prevent reflux of food into the oesophagus

·         Help digestion of meals

·         Eliminate food substances that predispose to heart burn

·         Prevent discomfort and improve nutrition

Types

·         Individual education

·         Group education

Steps

1.        Establish rapport (refer steps)

2.      Provide privacy and ensure client assume desired position

3.      Explain to client the need to attend antenatal clinic and procedures involved

4.      Explain the possible cause of the heartburn to her

5.      Advice client to reduce intake of fatty and spicy foods, caffeinated drinks

6.      Encourage her to eat small meals at frequent intervals but avoid excessive snacking

7.       Counsel her to avoid bending over or lying flat soon after meals

8.      Advise her to sleep with extra pillows (pop-up in bed; raise head end of bed)

9.      Sips of milk to neutralize the acid

10.    Prescribed antacids should be taken sparingly of in moderate amount

11.      Advice to her to get out of bed slowly

12.    Advice to her to get out of bed slowly

13.    Advice client to report to the clinic in case of severe heartburns

14.    Encourage client to ask questions and give appropriate answers

15.    Emphasize the need for client to adhere to information given
