This is a process of building a therapeutic relationship with the client and family. It makes the client and family feel comfortable in disclosing sensitive information which will aid in individualized care, based on their needs.

Steps
1. Welcome client, family and offer a comfortable seat
2. Sit near client, family and introduce yourself
3. Find out client’s name and title, and use it when addressing her
4. Speak to client using simple and clear language that client understands
5. Assure client that all conversations will remain confidential
6. Ask client about the presence of significant others/family member during conversation
7. Establish eye contact with the client during the interaction
8. Enquire from client the purpose of her visit (If applicable)
9. Explain to client what she should expect from you as a midwife
10. Encourage client to talk and express her feelings and listen attentively
11. Encourage client to open up in conversation by clarifying and paraphrasing statements
12. Use open ended statement to enable client express her issues well
13. Show consistency in approaching the client
14. Maintain a relaxed attitude when interacting with client to let her know that you have time for her
15. Demonstrate firmness in dealing with inappropriate and behaviour by the client if any
16. Express appreciation to client for her cooperation
